DU Manager Cellular Pathology
Margaret Middleton is a Consultant Biomedical Scientist with 27 years laboratory experience in cellular pathology. She trained in Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast and has worked in a variety of settings including district general hospitals and large teaching establishments in Ireland and London. She became a Fellow of IBMS in 1987 and was of the first to take the Advanced Specialist Diploma in cervical cytology in 2003 followed by the Diploma of Expert Practice in non gynaecological cytology in 2004.
Joining Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 2004 as scientific head of the cellular pathology department she combines a managerial role across cellular pathology with a diagnostic reporting role in cytopathology. She provides leadership and gives expert guidance to users of the service. Also participates in teaching scientific and medical staff up to MSc and MRCPath level.
Additional activities include giving presentations at regional, national and international conferences including Africa. Special interest includes teaching and sharing of good practice in the developing world. She is a member of the IBMS scientific advisory panel for cytopathology, Deputy Chief Examiner for IBMS in cytopathology, member of the RCpath/IBMS conjoint examination board, elected member of the British Society of Clinical Cytology and a member of the Advisory Committee on Cervical Cytology which advises the Department of Health on policy relating to the national screening programme. She contributes to publications and is currently preparing a chapter for a pathology text book series to be published later this year.
