Departments > Phlebotomy

The Phlebotomy Department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust hospital operates on various sites The Blood Test Centre is situated on the ground floor of the Lambeth Wing, St Thomas’ Hospital (The main site), Guy’s Hospital, Evelina Children’s Hospital and various on-site GP surgeries.

The principal function of the department is to draw blood samples from inpatients and outpatients. A walk-in service is available for those who have been referred by their medical practitioner. Blood samples are then sent on to the laboratory for analysis. The inpatient service is available between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm; the outpatient service at St Thomas’ Hospital operates from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

The department also provides Phlebotomy training to students nationwide.

The department has seen significant transformations. In 2008, specifically, the size of the department has doubled from four bleeding booths to eight. There has been extensive refurbishment of the waiting area and bleeding booths to enhance patient experience, as well as the staff room and the new Manager’s office to improve staff working conditions. There are now unisex toilets and baby-changing facilities installed.

The Phlebotomy department has further extended it’s reach to the community by introducing the Phlebotomy services on-site within several local GP practices. In October 2008, we launched the Capital’s first Polyclinic Phlebotomy Service (The Streatham Suite) at Gracefield Gardens.
