St John's Institute of Dermatology is one of the world's leading centre’s for patients with skin disease. It opened in1863.

There are five highly specialised laboratory services dedicated to the diagnosis and management of skin disease within St Johns:

  • Dermatopathology identifies pathology changes associated with skin diseases/abnormalities/infections by examination of the skin structure microscopically.
  • Immunodermatology provides immunological diagnoses of acquired blistering diseases using tissue biopsy and blood samples.
  • Mycology laboratory identifies fungal infections of skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes by microscopy and culture.
  • Skin Tumour Unit offers a molecular diagnostic service using PCR based techniques to identify clonal T cell and B cell populations to assist in the diagnosis of primary cutaneous T and B cell lymphomas.
  • National Epidermolysis Bullosa Laboratory identifies skin blistering diseases using electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and mutation analysis.  There is also a prenatal diagnostic service for epidermolysis bullosa.

The laboratories work closely with dermatologists, and being an integral part of St John’s Institute of Dermatology, uniquely form a centre of excellence where all services form part of a single team.  The laboratories are committed to the provision of accurate diagnostic and prognostic information relevant to treatment of skin disease, education of clinical colleagues and students, and advancement of research into their various subspecialties.
