CSR plays one of the most important roles in the pathology department. It is here that patient samples from many different wards, clinics, departments, other hospitals and GPs arrive so they can be sorted and sent, with relevant information, to the appropriate laboratory. CSR supports the routine service as well as the specialised services of the laboratory.
In May 2010, CSR introduced a separate section to its department - the Special Processing Unit (SPU). The SPU was set up to deal with all specimen discrepancies with the aim of working closely with GSTS customers to ensure the safe processing of samples. The SPU is also responsible for receiving and packaging of referral work as well as clinical trial samples.
There is also a trained and dedicated team who manage the post-analytical side of the department. These staff distribute pathology reports and operate the telephone enquires line.
CSR at Guy’s
CSR at Guy’s also operates a 24/7 service. All samples should be delivered to the hatch on the 5th floor, Southwark Wing. Couriers and porters wishing to deliver/pick up samples out of hours will need to follow the instructions at the entrance.
Samples delivered by hand and those that are urgent or sensitive must be signed in on the delivery sheet which will then be counter-signed by the receiving member of the CSR team. This will ensure that the mandatory sample acceptance requirements are adhered to and will allow us to process the sample as quickly as possible.
